The study was carried out during three years (1994-1996), and consisted two parts namely;: (1) The extent of variability and (2) the genetic study of height to first pod in four crosses of three guar lines (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba(L.)Taub) belong to semi-determinate (GM) type and one line (L14) belongs to the indeterminate type. A nested design with four replications was used for the study of extent of variability. The experiment included 20 guar lines, made up of 10 indeterminate and 10 semi-determinate lines with raised height to first pod evaluated. These lines were used to study the extent of variability in yield, yield component and some morphological characters including height to first pod. Genetic coefficient of variation (GCV), heritability (h2), expected genetic advance under selection (GA) as well as the association between the different characters were determined over the two seasons 2005 / 2006. A wide range of variability was detected for most of the characters between the two guar types as well as between lines within each type in both seasons. The highest GCV in the first season (21.73) was given by height to first pod, whereas the lowest (0.39 and 0.97) was given by plant height and days to flowering ,respectively, whereas in the second season number of pods / plant gave the highest GCV (10.41) and days to maturity gave the lowest (0.69). The highest estimate of heritability in both seasons (52.35 and 46.65%), were obtained for number of pods / main stem and the lowest were for plant height (0.75%) in the first season and seed yield / plant (8.67) in the second season. Furthermore, the largest GA was recorded for pods / main stem (14.33%) in the first season and number of pods / cluster / main stem (12.3%) in the second season, while the smallest , for plant height (0.07%) in the first season and days to maturity (0.67%) in the second vii season. The genetic advance followed the same trend as that of GCV while there was no definite trend between heritability and either GA or GCV. Grain yield / ha had strong positive genotypic and phenotypic association with some of its components namely: yield / plant and pods / plant and with height to first pod. However, negative associations were detected for 1000-seed weight with seed yield / ha and per plant as well as with pods / plant and height to first pod and were also detected for pods / plant with seeds / pod and for seeds / pod with 1000-seed weight at genotypic level. In Part II three semi-determinate (GM) parents were crossed with an indeterminate (L14) parent and GM1 was also crossed with GM2. Then P1, P2 and F2 generations were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications. A wide range of variability was reported for height to first pod in all crosses except GM1 x GM2 and for yield and some of its components in some crosses. The gene action analysis for height to first pod indicated the prevalence of two major genes with epistatic interaction, partial dominance and additive effect, thus giving a ratio of 1AABB: 8AaBb, Aabb, aaBb: 6AABb, aaBB, AaBB, AAbb: 1aabb.
