Abstract
This study is an attempt to examine the pattern of rural land use
in East Nile locality – Khartoum State.
The main objectives of the study are:
1‐ To identify and analyze the changes that took place in the
shape of land use in the study area during the period 1971‐
2008.
2‐ To assess the environmental changes, and explain their causes
and how they might affect the pattern of land use in the
future.
3‐ To highlight the demographic and socio‐economic
characteristics of the population.
The required data for the study was drawn from secondary
sources and fieldwork that included a questionnaire targeting a
simple random sample of the population. Land sat images and
Arial photographs were used to determine the changes in the
shape land use.
To achieve the objectives of the study various research methods
are adopted namely, geographical, descriptive and quantitative
approaches.
The main findings of the study are:
• Agricultural activities and pastoralism are the main occupations
of the people.
• Climatic changes (drought) and desertification had a negative
impact on land use.
• Deforestation led to the disappearance of a significant
percentage of the vegetation cover.
• An increase in cultivated land on the expense of the natural
grazing areas is recognized.
