Abstract
Activity and selectivity of two pre-emergence herbicides for the control of annual weeds in garlic crop (Allium sativum L.) were evaluated during winter season of 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 in The Experimental Research Farm of The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum at Shambat, Sudan. The herbicides used were Stomp (pendimethalin) at 2.1 and 4.2 Kg.ai/ha, Goal (oxyfluorfen) at o.25 and 0.5 Kg.ai/ha, mixture between Stomp and Goal (Stomp at 2.1 Kg.ai/ha with Goal at 0.25 Kg.ai/ha and Stomp at 4.2 Kg.ai/ha with Goal at 0.5 Kg.ai/ha), and mixture between Stomp and Goal (Stomp at 2.1 Kg.ai/ha with Goal at 0.25 Kg.ai/ha followed by hand weeding and Stomp at 4.2 Kg.ai/ha with Goal at 0.5 Kg.ai/ha followed by hand weeding. All herbicides treatments gave selective control of most annual grass and broad-leaved weeds and significantly increased garlic yield over the weedy check. However, all herbicides treatments reduced weed dry weight compared to weedy check. The increase in yield resulting from those treatments varied from 51 to 221%. Only mixture between Stomp and Goal followed by hand-weeding gave yield comparable with that obtained from weed free check. The increase in garlic yield due to the application of the herbicides was mainly due to an increase in garlic bulb weight and increase in number of cloves per bulb. The herbicide Goal reduced the growth of garlic, because of some tolerant broad-leaved weeds, but the final yield significantly was better than weedy check.
