Potency of Pulicaria crispa (Forssk.) Oliv. (Asteraceae) on Bulinus truncatus Host Snails of Schistosomes

Abstract
The study aimed at investigating the efficiency of aqueous extract of the herb Pulicaria crispa- locally known as \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Taghar\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in Sudan- in the biological control of Bulinus truncatus snails, the intermediate hosts of Schistosoma haematobium and S. bovis parasites causing human and animal schistosomiasis, respectively. Results obtained were: firstly, un-sieved residue of leaves was the most potent compared to sieved powder and whole leaves. Secondly, successive method was more effective than one-step method in extracting the bioactive ingredient(s).Thirdly; extraction of un-sieved residue of leaves with successive method for 12 hours was superior over 24 and 6 hours extraction periods. Fourthly, juveniles were the most susceptible, followed by one day old egg masses, then immature young, and finally mature adults. Fifthly, P. crispa from Riyadh showed higher potency than that from Khartoum. Sixthly, P. crispa was not bioactive to bulti fishes (Orechromis niloticus) at molluscicidal concentration. Seventhly, 100% mortality and high level of significant inhibition of fecundity was achieved with continuous exposure of adult snails to sub-lethal concentrations of P.crispa extract for six days
