Abstract
This study was carried out to detexmine the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and Sarrcocystis sp. in chicken meat.
A total of 300 samples were examined and 281 isolates (80.5%) were recovered from 5 different sites (thigh, under the wing, breast, coloaca and the neck) . Another 68 isolateسswere obtained from 50 peritoneum samples.
Of these 349 isolates, 140 were identified as S. aureus. The highest percentage of coagulase positive Staphylococci in different sites was isolated from the peritoneum (50%). However, the highest percentage of coagulase positive staphylococci isolated from different sources was found in the market birds (71.7%).
Fifty four S. aureus strains were tested against ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole, amoxycillin, trimethoprim and tetracycline. All the strains were found very sensitive to ampicillin and amoxycillin, partially sensitive to trimethoprim and tetracycline and most of them were resistant to sulfamethoxazole. Nine S. aureus strains were tested against the combinations of these antibiotics. The combinations of' ampicillin and amoxycillin were the most effective and those of Trimethoprim and tetracycline were the least effective.
One hundred and twenty meat samples were examined for the presence of Sarcocystis cyst and all samples were found negative
