Abstract

This study deals with the production of groundnuts. The crop is included in the agricultural rotation; according to the choice of the farmer. The study area covered Southern-Gezira Locality. The farmer is free, then, to cultivate any other crop (e.g. onions, chickpeas, vegetables). This required the study of the economic and social impact, as compared to the production of other crops and the effect on the concerned farmers. The collection of data necessitated conducting some interviews with a number of the responsible officials; such as, the three division managers (Central, Hoash and Southern). In addition, interviews covered the groundnuts and other crops farmers and others. The field study represented a sample of the groundnuts farmers; another for the other crops farmers (non-groundnuts farmers) in agricultural rotation. The study realized several results. The most important of these were: the old ages of the farmers of the groundnuts crop and the low level of education had contributed to their non-adoption of the agricultural extension directions which were issued to them by the management of the Gezira Scheme. This affected production negatively. It was also found that the income from the production of groundnuts is far less than that income other crops. This, in turn, affects the level of the groundnuts farmers, negatively, in their economic and social life. This occurs at the time the costs of the production of groundnuts are far less than that of the other crops per feddan. The investigator, recommends the promotion of awareness of the farmers concerning the importancey for technical agricultural (packages). Furthermore, it could be viewed that mechanization in completing the agricultural operations of the groundnuts crop, may be introduced. The banks are to encouraged to assist the groundnuts farmers, concerning giving them soft loans.
