Abstract

Impact of Um Jawasir Project on the Socio-economic livelihood of the Hawaweer Community.” The aims of this study is to trace the socio- economic charges that took place in the Hawaweer life as a result of their enrollment in Um Jawasir Community Development project (UCDP) that was established by ADRA. The study intended to assess the effect of their traditional nomadic life on their current animal production activities in the Project. The study also investigated the involvement of the Hawaweer women in the livelihood transformation that took place in the project area. The study adopted descriptive analysis emphasizing indicators based on informal interviews and group discussions with key members of the farming community and of the Project personnel. The main findings of the study revealed noticeable social changes taking place among the Hawaweer people. They have acquired new experience on irrigated agriculture from wells mounted by water pumps. Farmers learnt how to plan for their food security by cultivating wheat in winter and sorghum in summer and for cash by growing Hilba, Okra and broad beans. Their nomadic background had influenced the young Hawaweer people towards animal raising as a measure of wealth. Women were found to be involved in the social transformation that took place in the project area. A Hawaweer woman knows about health, nutrition, sewing and farming activities.
