Abstract
The study deals with the Sudanese Ethiopian border with regard to the problems and solutions in the area from Daglash mountain till the confluent of the Khor Rawyan with the river seteet, bearing in mind that the geopolitics address the distribution or political units on the surface of the earth in particular distance ranging from a continent or a group of continents or the whole world. This distribution is targeting primarily the description of the place and time relationship between political units. This study requires beyond doubt that the focus should be put on the political borders which constitute the framework that defines the state entity and forms the general framework of the region that the state occupies and whereupon it exercises it’s sovereignty. Therefore, the researcher chose to deal with the political borders that constitute an important role from the economic, social, security and political aspects. The study focused on the area lying from Daglash mountain to the south up to confluence of Khor Rawyan with seteet River to the North due to problem which are typical of this region which is a farming area in the Sudanese side and mountainous and plateau in the Ethiopian side. This led to numerous incursions from the Ethiopian side on the Sudanese territory. It followed in woven methods in this research of which the descriptive methods used for the purpose of describing the area of study the border line between Sudan and Ethiopia in addition to the historical political methods as represented by the illustration of the historical background of the border demarcation as it appears in the Agreement, of border points drawing of maps and the and the demarcation of the border on the land. The study used also analytical method by analyzing all the data related to the study and weave it together to assess its geographical repercussions. It used the statistical method in counting the number of the Ethiopian farmers inside the area and the lands they exploit as well as the number of the Sudanese farmers and the lands they exploit. The researcher relied on primary sources for data collection including the field work which was carried out through the personal interviews with officers in charge of the subject of this research besides personal interviews with the leaders of Gadarf State Farmers Association. She also relied upon the secondary sources including books, researches, periodicals and the Committees reports which are obtained from the competent authorities and which are related to the subject of study. In fact, the data drawn from these sources helped very much the researcher in explaining the geo-political and legal situation of the border demarcation. It helped also in illustrating the type of border between the two countries while highlighting the present situation of the common border between Sudan and Ethiopia in terms of economic, social and security problems and the factors that contributed in aggravating these problems. The researcher followed the descriptive method, the historical and political method and the analytical method. In conclusion, the researcher reached many results the most important of which is that borders between Sudan and Ethiopia are recognized by both sides despite the dilemma that accompanied the demarcation and tracing of common borders. Several natural economic and social have triggered the border issues Moreover, the political factors helped in further aggravating the magnitude and the lengthy period of these problems. The study came up with numerous recommendations the most important of which is the emphasis on the necessity of re-demarcation and the development of the border zones. The development of border area to attract the inhabitants, the re-opening police outposts as well as the camps from which it withdrew or evacuated besides the establishment of a directorate of the border guards to safeguard the political border line between Sudan and it’s neighboring countries particularly between Sudan and Ethiopia This study can be useful for the resolution of the political border clashes between Sudan and other neighboring countries by trying not to repeat the same mistakes that marked the attempts of settling the border problem between Sudan and Ethiopia especially as regards the work of the Joint Committees and marked the drafting of Agreements
