Abstract

This study was conducted in the River Nile State in 2005/2006 season. The problem statement is the factors affecting broad bean productivity in River Nile State. Theobjective of the study is to know the economics of broad bean in the River Nile State (Shendi Area), and to explore the main reason that causes decrease in the crop productivity and increase in the cost of production. The main hypothesis of the study were the following:- 1. The production of the crop is influenced by the socioeconomic 2. characteristic of the farmers. The broad bean productivity is affected by the high 3. cost of the inputs of the production. The broad bean productivity is affected by the insect’s 4. damage and the unstable climate. The study depends on primary data which were collected by a field survey from a stratified random sample of 100 respondents in the state via a structural questionnaire. The surveyed data was supplemented by secondary data from other relevant sources. The main method for the data analysis was (statistical description, multi-regression equation, and budget farm analysis) to know the factors affecting the productivity of the crop. The important findings of the study were the following:- The main reason of the low level of the crop production for the season 2005/2006 was the bad climate. The un-uses of the improved seeds, tended to cause low level of the productivity of the crop. The un-uses of the fertilizers and herbicides and pesticides, affected the low level of the productivity of the crop. The study recommended that special attention should be given to the production and distribution of improved seeds. Using an optimum quantity of the fertilizers and herbicides and pesticides recommended by the agriculture research would lead to high level of crop productivity.
