Abstract
Two experiments were conducted to study performance of broiler-type and layer-type birds on diets containing maize, soybean, sesame cake, cotton seed cake and sugar cane molasses. Chemical analysis of these ingredients showed differences in protein, fat, mineral and gross energy contents. The birds receiving sesame diet showed significantly less weight gain compared with those on other diets. The birds on molasses diet tended to eat more while those receiving cotton seed diet ate less. The four diets compared favourable in egg weight and egg production. However, yolk analysis showed slight variations in protein, phospholipids and cholesterol content. The birds receiving cotton seed diet showed the highest carcass fat content while, those on molasses diet showed the highest carcass protein. No significant treatment effect was produced on blood glucose with birds receiving the four experimental diets, but those on cotton seed diet showed less serum protein content.
