Abstract
Field experiments were conducted at Um Dom Project of the Arab Company for Agricultural Production and Processing, during the winter seasons of 1997-1998 and 1998-1999, to determine the effect of different inter– row spacings and different seed placements on growth parameters and total exportable yield per feddan of the Galia melon F1 (Cucumis melo L.). Galia melon F1 is considered as the leading cultivar of melon on the sudan that grown mainly for export. Three inter-row spacing (1.75m, 2.00m and 2.25m) and three seed placements (two seeds/two sides, two seeds/one side and one seed/two sides) were used in these experiments. The highest average number of perfect flowers per plant were obtained at the inter–row spacing of 1.75 m with seed placement of two seeds/ one side (6.31). The inter–row spacing of 1.75m with the seed placement one seed/ two sides gave the highest average number of branches per plant (7.2). Whereas, the inter– row spacing of 2.00m with its different seed placements resulted in the highest average number of nodes per plant (12.52). The inter– row spacing of 2.25m with the different seed placements resulted in the highest average number of fruits per plant (10.88), while the same inter-row spacing with the seed placement of two seeds / one side resulted in the highest exportable yield per feddan (4.2 tons/f). The inter – row spacing of 2.00 m with the seed placement two seeds/ one side resulted in the highest percentage of exportable yield per feddan (71.9%). Whereas. The inter–row spacing of 1.75m with the seed placement one seed / two sides gave the lowest percentage of exportable yield per feddan (23.8%). The inter– row spacing of 1.75m with the different seed placements resulted in the highest fruit losses.
