Abstract

The present research primarily deals with the new role the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – NATO- is seeking to play and the tasks it inspires to achieve in the post cold war era, in comparison to its traditional role during the cold war period; which was to roll back any potential attack by the soviet union on western Europe; and how NATO’s strategy had turned after the cold war into safeguarding the western interests worldwide through the treaties new strategic concept that come to be recognized in the early 1995s. The research, also, aims to discuss the US call for expanding the NATO and the undeclared objectives of that call. Finally, the research has listed the NATO’s military operations outside the geographic boundaries provided for in the 1949 Washington agreement that has initiated the NATO, besides the legality of those operations based on the UN charter. The research is divided into three chapters. The first chapter traced the progress of the international community towards establishing peace and security since the coming into being at the modern state in 1648 until the establishment of the United Nations, as well as dealing with the phenomena of treaties in the international relations. The traditional role of the NATO during the post cold war era is discussed in the second chapter; while the third chapter revolves round the NATO’s new role in the post cold war period. The most important finding the research has concluded is that the US seeks to turn NATO into a tool serving its interests in the world
