Abstract
This study was carried out to estimate the time, labor and Energy input requirements for production of sorghum, cotton and sunflower crops and to compare these inputs with energy outputs of the crops in Gezira scheme. The data required for the study were collected through questionnaire and from field records. Thirty five sites were randomly selected at three sections in the scheme for collection of data. Interviews were also carried out with some leaders of farmers, field engineers, inspectors and tenants. The data collected included the number of labour and time required and types of mechanization used for different operations. Analysis of data showed that the manual labour required for production of the three crops was 27 man-days/fed for sorghum, 45 man-days/fed for cotton and 35 man-days/fed for sunflower. The total time required for production of sorghum was 224 h / fed., for cotton was 360 h/fed and for sunflower was 264 h/fed, where as energy input requirement was 200.2 MJ / fed, 331MJ/fed and 207 MJ/fed for sorghum, cotton and sunflower respectively. The productions of the three crops in the scheme during 1992 – 2002 were used for comparison with inputs estimated. The study showed variable energy outputs and output/input ratios during these seasons. The average output/input ratios of these seasons were 7.6 for sorghum, 8.8 for cotton and 15.9 for sunflower. As the energy output/input ratio increased, crop production was observed to increase. Therefore linear relationships between energy output/input ration and crop production was established for the three crops. The correlation coefficient (r2) of the three crops varied between 0.886 - 0.976.
