Application Of Politeness Strategies In English As A Second Language: The Case Of Sudanese Learners At Graduate Level

Abstract

Politeness has been the subject of an enormous amount of research in the past twenty years. Brown and Levinson (1987) suggested that politeness strategies are universal. This study is about the production of politeness strategies by Sudanese students learning English as a second language. The aim of the study is to test the existence of Brown and Levinson\\\\\\\'s (1987) politeness strategies. Another aim is to assess the pragmatic competence of the students to see if they can use politeness strategies appropriately. The researcher assumes that some of Brown and Levinson\\\\\\\'s (1987) politeness strategies are universal. She suggests that the subjects are not pragmatically competent in English and they transfer the social rules of their Arabic speech community to English. The total number of the subjects under study is a hundred. The subjects are Sudanese post-graduate students (doing M.A. and High Diploma in English at Sudanese universities). The researcher adopted the Discourse Completion Task test as the main tool for collecting data. The test consists of thirteen situations controlled by factors such as distance, power, and rank of imposition. The study indicates that some of the politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) are used by the subjects. The study concludes by stating that the Sudanese non-native speakers of English are pragmatically incompetent. This could be due to the possibility that the subjects transfer the rules of their L1 to L2. English Abstract المستخلص باللغة العربية يعتبر الأدب في اللغة المادة الأساسية لعدد من البحوث في العشرين سنة الماضية. قدم براون وليفنسون (1987م) استراتيجيات الأدب في اللغة زاعمين بأن هذه الاستراتيجيات عالمية. هذه الدراسة عن استخدام إستراتيجيات الأدب في اللغة الإنجليزية من قبل طلاب سودانيين يتعلمون اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة ثانية. الهدف من الدراسة هو معرفة ما إذا كان الطلاب السودانيون يستخدمون تلك الاستراتيجيات التي قدمها براون وليفنسون. السبب الآخر هو تقييم القدرة الواقعية للطلاب ولمعرفة ما إذا كان بإمكانهم استخدام هذه الإستراتيجيات بصورة صحيحة. افترضت الباحثة أن بعض استراتيجيات التأدب التي قدمها براون وليفنسون عالمية. اقترحت الباحثة أيضاً أن الطلاب السودانيين غير قادرين على استخدام تلك الاستراتيجيات بصورة واقعية، وأنهم ينقلون قوانين مجتمعهم المتحدث باللغة العربية إلي الإنجليزية. العدد الكامل لعينات البحث عبارة عن مائة (100) طالب. العينات عبارة عن طلاب دراسات عليا سودانيون يدرسون ماجستير ودبلوم عالي في اللغة الإنجليزية في جامعات سودانية. استخدمت الدارسة اختبار تكميل الحوار كأداة رئيسية لجمع بيانات البحث. يتكون الاختبار من ثلاثة عشر (13) موضع محكمة بعدة عوامل كالمسافة، القوة، ورتبة الفرض. أشارت الدراسة إلي أن بعض استراتيجيات التأدب التي قدمها براون وليفنسون عالمية. خلصت الدراسة أيضاً إلي أن الطلاب السودانيين المتحدثين باللغة الإنجليزية غير قادرين علي استخدامها بصورة واقعية. ومن المحتمل أن السبب هو أن الطلاب يقومون بنقل قوانين لغتهم الأم إلي اللغة الثانية.
