Abstract
Cross-sectional, hospital based, descriptive study was conducted at
Kassala Maternity Hospital (March-September, 2007)
To study low birth weight among the new born and identify the factors
contributing to low birth weight.
The proportion of low birth weight was (11.4%) among the new born at
Kassala Maternity Hospital.
(17.9%) of rural mothers delivered low birth weight .(30%) of mothers age
less than 18 years delivered low birth weight .Education level was associated
with low birth weight in (37%) . (11.9) of house wives delivered low birth
weight .Low birth weight was found to be (14.3%) among mothers have
high in come. (56%) of mothers gestational period less than 37 weeks
delivered low birth weight .Pregnancy spacing 1-2years found to be (20%)
of those who delivered low birth weight .Diseases during pregnancy related
to high rate of low birth weight . (34%) of women delivered low birth
weight not received prenatal care. (20%) 0f smokers delivered low birth
weight. Parents conflicts is associated factor of low birth weight (26.5%).
(14.3%) of the low birth weight have family relation ships between parents.
