Abstract
This experiment was conducted under semi controlled environmental conditions in the glasshouse, in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Khartoum, Shamabat, Sudan, during the winter growing season of (2002-2003), to test the efficacy of four pre-emergence herbicides for weed control in fennel crop, (Foeniculum vulgare M.). The herbicide used were Atrazine, Oxadiazon, oxyflurofen and pendimethalin, the doses used were (0.5, 0.75, 1.0 L/feddan) for Gesaprim (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 L/feddan) for Ronstar. (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 L/fedan) for oxyflurofen and 0.25, 0.50, 0.75L/feddan pendimethalin. Atrazine and Oxadiazon are phytotoxic and therefore excluded. The study showed a significant increase in the control of broad leaved weeds and narrow leaved weeds especially the higher doses compared with the weedy-check. The doses used resulted in a significant decrease in plant height and percentage of seed germination specially the higher doses but showed significant increased in fresh and dry weight of the crop. The study showed that some weeds such as (Datura spp L.), Solanum dubium L.), (Cyperus rotundus L.) and (Cynodon dactylon L.) some tolerance to the herbicides used.
