Abstract
This experiment was conducted in a semi-controlled glass house in e Faculty
of Agriculture, University of Khartoum (Shambat), during the Vinter season
(2002/2003), in two sowing dates (15th of November, first Dwng date and 15th of
December, second sowing date), to evaluate the eiectivity and efficacy of the two
herbicides and their mixtures for the control of annual weeds in the garlic crop
(Allium sativum L.). The herbicides used were pendimethalin at 2.1 and 4.2 kg/ha;
oxyfluorfen 0.25 and 0.5 kg/ha and mixmres between the herbicides at their two
rates respectively.
All herbicides treatments have increased significantly the percent control of
annual broad-leaved and narrow-leaved weeds compared to weedy check and the
same is true, for the growth parameters including crop fresh weight, dry weight,
plant height and number of leaves. Herbicide mixtures at their two rates gave the
highest percent control of annual weeds as well as growth parameters compared to
the single use of either. The herbicide pendimethalin alone gave excellent percent
control of annual weeds as well as growth parameters including crop fresh weight,
crop dry weight, garlic number of leaves and garlic plant height compared to
oxyflorfen especially at its post emergent application because it was found to
retard the growth of the garlic crop.
The herbicides efficacy or % control of weed were reduced by 3-25% in controling
certain biennial and perennial broad and narrow - leaved. Weeds such as Datura
spp.L., Solonum dubium L., Ipomea cordofana L, Rynchosia Memnonia (Del),
Merremia emarginata, Cynodon dactylon and Cyprus retandus.
