Abstract
Sixty samples were collected from different organs of
poultry, 16 of these samples were livers, 15 intestines, 7 lungs, 5
hearts, 5 spleens, 4 eye swabs, 3 ovaries, one pharynx, 2
kidneys, one brain and one embryo. Out of these samples 50
isolates were isolated and identified as Escherichia coli.
All the isolates were negative to oxidase test, positive to
catalase test, Voges. Proskaur negative, MR test positive, H2S
negative and ONPG positive.
All the isolates fermented glucose, maltose, sorbitol and
raffinose. 84% of the isolates fermented sucrose, 88% were
positive to indole test, 86% were negative to urease test and
78% of the isolates were molile. All the isolates were
fermentative.
Ten strains of E. coli were selected according to the
differences in results of biochemical tests and investigated to
determine whether they produce cytotoxic activity in Vero cells
and Bovine kidney cells.
All the isolates produced cytotoxic activity in bovine
kidney cells although they did not produce cytotoxic effect in
Vero cells.
