التحولات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية فى نظم الاقتصاد الريفى بمنطقة مشروع الحرقة – نور الدين (محلية مدنى الكبرى– ولاية الجزيرة)

Abstract

The study addresses the impact of the introduction of modern large-scale industrial and agricultural schemes on the rural and traditional economic systems that were prevalent prior to such an introduction. The subject has been of interest to social scientists and other parties for quite a while now. Such impact is sought through an investigation and analysis of the socioeconomic changes undergone by what has hitherto being considered a rural and subsistence way of living. The venue for the study was the area designated and known as AL-Hurga Nur AL-Deen in Central Sudan. The fertile land of the area which represents a triangle bounded by the intersection of the Blue Nile, and its two tributaries the Rahad and Dinder rivers was the main catalyst that led to the establishment of what is now referred to as Al-Hurga Nur AL-Deen Agricultural Scheme. Due to the complexity of the study and the nature of the questions it endeavors to answer multiple and different theoretical frameworks were relied upon to make sense of the data collected and to guide the research project to its logical conclusions. To verify the study’s assumptions and test its hypotheses both secondary and primary data were utilized. The primary data were analyzed and deciphered using the SPSS Statistical package for social science. The effect of the introduction of modern, organized developmental projects –epitomized here by Al-Hurga Nur AL-Deen Agricultural Scheme- on the traditional and rural lifestyles of the inhabitants of the area under study is discussed along three dimensions: a. Changes in the economic and production relations. b. Changes in social relations and the social structure of the community. c. Ecological changes. The study manages to relate these changes to the process of industrialization and modernization that more or less has destroyed the old ways of life and the traditional economic and social systems of such communities as well. In light of the conclusions and findings of the study a number of policy recommendations were suggested in order to mitigate the negative impact of the process in question.
