Abstract
This study is concerned with studying the impact of migration on the conjugal roles and relations of the Sudanese migrant families who live in Doha, in the state of Qatar.Where the study aims at investigating the impact of the ecological, socioeconomic and cultural context of the receiving country (Qatar) on the conjugal roles and relations of Sudanese migrant families. The study while addressing the conjugal roles and relations tackles the following areas; the relations between the spouses, the household economy, the family social relations, and the relations of the family with their homeland, In addition the study also investigate the structure of power within the family which will be achieved by analyzing the domestic work system and the degree of sharing the house work responsibilities between the spouses. The study will also address the status and roles of the working woman in addition to investigating the presence of acculturation and adaptation symptoms between the Sudanese immigrant children. In other words, the study investigate the impact of the ecological, social, economical and cultural ecological context of the Qatari society on the Sudanese immigrant family life .Where the study aims at identifying the anticipated responses and changes that took place within the Sudanese migrant families due to immigration. The study depended for interpretation upon the interpretation and view points of the structural functionalism theory in addressing the problem of study, as the structural functionalism theory has a sound comprehensive approach for explaining and interpreting the family structure social behavior and interactions. As far as the methodological procedure of the study, both the qualitative and quantitative methods are used in order to obtain the required data and to analyze the phenomena under study. As for the qualitative method used in the study, the observation participation and the group discussion methods are used in order to shed light upon the style of life and the daily activities of the Sudanese migrant's families. The group discussion method is also used to identify the status and roles of the working women. Here an intended sample consisting of 8 working women were selected to perform the group discussion. As for the quantitative method of the study, the study depended the social survey method where a closed questionnaire that consisted of 56 questions was used. The questionnaire consisted of two parts, the first part contains the questions related to the following areas of study: the personal characteristic of the migrants, migration and work, the relation between spouse, the economy of the family, the social relations of the family and the status of the working women. While the second part of the questionnaire contains the questions related to the presence of acculturation and adaptation of the Sudanese migrants children. The statistical package for social science (SPSS) program was used in the study to analyze the data of the research. In addition, the deduction method and the anthropological method was also used for data analysis. Then, the processed and analyzed data which were obtained has been interpreted in percentage and figures formulae. The deduction method was used for the interpretation of the results and to compare between the findings of the different socio economic categories of the migrant. As far as the findings of the study are concerned, the most important findings were the following: The percentage of sample that represents the youth group was the lowest among sample. It was also found that there are vivid evidences of selectivity for migration of the higher educationally qualified migrants. The study also concluded that most of the migrants were from Khartoum and Al-jazeera states, while the lowest percentage of migrants was from the southern and eastern states of the Sudan. It is also evident from the finding of the study that migration had great impact on the conjugal roles and relations of the Sudanese migrant families in general and on the relation between the spouses in particular. It was also noted that migration has improved the status of migrant house wives in general and the status of the working women in particular. The study findings reveal that, migration has improved the economic and social status of the Sudanese migrant families and enhanced the family's conjugal roles and relations in addition to the relations between the spouses. It was also found the economic and social standard of the family has great impact on the standard and the quality of life of the Sudanese migrant families and on the material benefits they obtained from migration. Also the study reveals that most of the migrant families have great inclination for repatriation. As for the Sudanese migrant children, although there are no evidences to indicating the presence of strong ties between the Sudanese migrant children with their homeland culture and heritage, but the evidences indicate the absence of acculturation and adaptation of the Sudanese migrant children to the Qatari society which can be described an anti- assimilating society. From the pre-mentioned findings we conclude that the migration of the Sudanese families has a positive effect on the conjugal roles and relations of the Sudanese migrant families especially the working women. But, on the other hand migration has a negative impact on the total assimilation of the Sudanese migrant children in the Qatari society
