Abstract
This research attempts to assess and identify the role of oil seeds sector and its contribution to the national economy of the Sudan. It is a common knowledge that this sector possesses all essential components of growth and development such as human work force element, which is the basic driving force, vast arable land for the cultivation of oilseeds as well as other cash or non-cash crops. However, there are certain obstacles that hinder the development of the said sector and restrain realization of its objective the consequently which reduces its share in the national economy. The research evaluates contribution of oilseed, industry in availing foreign currency that is used in importing foreign goods. This can be saved if goods are locally manufactured according to Imports Substitution Strategy. The latter may help further in obtaining more foreign currency through Export Oriented Strategy. On the other hand, food security, employment opportunities and value added products through of raw materials into finished products represent other contribution of this sector. The research studies and evaluates those contributions and identifies their actual role in the national economy. Finally, the research concludes that the oil seeds industry cannot render an efficient contribution to the industrial sector and the state. It should have made a substantial support to the industrial sector had its obstacles have been resolved and an appropriate solution; being reached which could have changed the present reality
