Abstract
There is general agreement that the etiology of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) includes multifactorial combination of physical and psychosocial factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of TMD among partially edentulous patients with and without removable dentures in Khartoum State, to determine the role of loss of posterior teeth and the effect of removable partial dentures on TMD. Moreover, to detect the influence of psychological factor on TMD. The sample included 80 subjects (32male and 48female) in the age range of 25-75 years. All the participants were partially edentulous missing up to the bicuspids teeth, half of them were denture wearers, they were interviewed and examined for TMD diagnosis and requested to answer an Abridge Psychiatric self rating questionnaire for Psychiatric assessment. The prevalence of TMD among all subjects was11 (13.8%). The group of non-denture wearers showed 6(15%) TMD cases IV and denture wearers revealed 5(12.5%) cases with a nonsignificant difference (P > 0.05). On the other hand, significant correlation between psychological status and TMD was resulted, as 10 (90.9%) of probably psychiatric individuals were diagnosed as TMD subjects. (P value < 0.05). Denture related conditions such as the duration of denture in use, type of denture, retention, stability and Occlusal characteristics had no effect on TMD occurrence. The study has shown gender difference among TMD individuals with female predominance (2.6:1).
