dc.description.abstractPeste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a contagious viral disease of sheep and goats that causes varying degrees of morbidity and mortality in susceptible animals (Radostits et al., 2000). Since it was first described in 1940, several outbreaks have been reported (Ali and Taylor, 1984). Detection of antibodies (Abs) against PPR virus has also been reported in other species, including cattle (Anderson and MacKay, 1994; El Amin and Hassan, 1999). The fact that PPR virus belongs to Morbillivirus, the same genus as rinderpest (RP) virus (Barrett et al., 1993) poses risks for the control of rinderpest in naturally endemic areas from the neutralization of the RP virus vaccine strain by antibodies produced against PPR virus (Diallo et al., 1995). In an attempt to investigate the prevalence of PPR in Sudan, where RP is endemic, a retrospective study based on serosurveillance was conducted in several species of livestock in the field.en_US
